IPL Players Retentions and Analysis.
Mumbai Indians
- 5 players retained: Jasprit Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (INR 16.35 crore), Hardik Pandya (INR 16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (INR 16.30 crore), Tilak Varma (INR 8 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 45 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 1
- Players eligible for RTM: One uncapped player
- Big players not retained: Ishan Kishan, Tim David
StormRiderzz' Analysis: Hardik Pandya has been named the MI captain for IPL 2025, while Jasprit Bumrah has become MI's highest-paid retained player for the first time. The big challenge for MI was to retain their marquee Indian players within the INR 75 crore purse, and they have managed to do so, keeping their core intact heading into the IPL 2025 mega auction. They will wait and use their Right to Match (RTM) card in the auction, choosing between Nehal Wadhera, Anshul Kamboj, or Akash Madhwal. It seems they could have retained Ishan Kishan, but we don't know what transpired between the player and the franchise. Perhaps Ishan Kishan believed he could fetch a higher price in the auction than what MI offered. However, with just 45 crores remaining in their purse, MI should definitely look for bargains and steal deals in the auction, focusing on unestablished players with potential. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for MI: 4.0
Sunrisers Hyderabad
- 5 players retained: Heinrich Klaasen (INR 23 crore), Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore), Abhishek Sharma (INR 14 crore), Travis Head (INR 14 crore), Nitish Kumar Reddy (INR 6 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 45 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 1
- Players eligible for RTM: Only one uncapped player
- Big players not retained: Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
StormRiderzz' Analysis: Heinrich Klaasen is the most expensive player retained at INR 23 crore, ahead of Virat Kohli and Nicholas Pooran at INR 21 crore each. SRH has retained three overseas players, the most among the ten teams. Spending 23 crores on an inconsistent, albeit big-hitting player like Klaasen, and retaining Nitish Kumar Reddy for a whopping 6 crores seems to be an overpricing of their value. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for SRH: 4.0/5.
Chennai Super Kings
- 5 players retained: Ruturaj Gaikwad (INR 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (INR 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 13 crore), Shivam Dube (INR 12 crore), MS Dhoni (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 55 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 1
- Players eligible for RTM: One capped or uncapped player
- Big players not retained: Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, etc
StormRiderzz' Analysis: Dhoni is retained as an uncapped player at a cost of only INR 4 crore from CSK's purse. This is because the IPL revived a rule, which had been scrapped in 2021, that allows an Indian player who hasn't played international cricket for five years to be considered an uncapped player. The retention of either Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra was highly expected, but CSK decided to take a chance on them in the auction. We'll have to wait and see how that plays out. Not retaining Deepak Chahar or Shardul Thakur is a relief, and I'd be even more relieved if CSK does not bid for them in the auction as well. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for CSK: 4.5/5.Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore
- 3 players retained: Virat Kohli (INR 21 crore), Rajat Patidar (INR 11 crore), Yash Dayal (INR 5 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 83 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 3
- Players eligible for RTM: One uncapped player and two capped players, or three capped players
- Big players not retained: Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, Faf du Plessis, Cameron Green
StormRiderzz' Analysis: RCB have retained only three players, the second fewest among the team
teams after Punjab Kings. Virat Kohli is the top retention, which raises
the question of whether he will return as captain. Well, Anyday I'd say that any retention amount for a player above 18 crores is over paying, but Virat Kohli deserves that. I definitely do not agree with the retention strategy of retaining Rajat Patidar for a freaking 11 crores, and there are mediocre bowlers like Yash Dayal anywhere you turn in the auction. I'd say this is poor strategy for RCB. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for RCB - 2.5/5.
Delhi Capitals
- 4 players retained: Axar Patel (INR 16.50 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (INR 13.25 crore), Tristan Stubbs (INR 10 crore), Abishek Porel (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 73 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 2
- Players eligible for RTM: One uncapped player and one capped player, or two capped players
- Big players not retained: Rishabh Pant, David Warner, Anrich Nortje
StormRiderzz' Analysis: Rishabh Pant was not retained by DC, for untold reasons. Which means they need a new
captain for IPL 2025, unless they buy him back at the auction and make
him captain, which appears unlikely. DC are paying their capped retained
players - Axar, Kuldeep and Stubbs - a total of INR 43.75 crore, which
is less than the aggregate deduction from their purse (INR 47 crore). I'd say this is a very poor retention strategy cause definitely they should've retained Rishabh Pant; Axar Patel at a much lower price. And does Kuldeep and Stubbs deserve 13.25 crores and 10 crores? Hell nah! This is too much. I even doubt whether Stubbs will be a regular 1st team player. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for DC - 1.5/5.
Kolkata Knight Riders
- 6 players retained: Rinku Singh (INR 13 crore), Varun Chakravarthy (INR 12 crore), Sunil Narine (INR 12 crore), Andre Russell (INR 12 crore), Harshit Rana (INR 4 crore), Ramandeep Singh (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 51 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: None
- Players eligible for RTM: None
- Big players not retained: Shreyas Iyer, Mitchell Starc, Phil Salt, Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana
StormRiderzz' Analysis: Russell emerged as a late confirmation for KKR, and Rinku Singh has
become their top retention for the first time. They have not retained
their title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer and the most expensive player
ever in IPL history, Mitchell Starc, who bowled match-winning spells in
Qualifer 1 and the final last year. KKR are one of two teams - along
with Rajasthan Royals - to have retained the maximum of six players, but
they have paid only INR 57 crore for them, while the amount deducted
from the purse is INR 69 crore. This again is overvalued retentions with poor strategies. Retentions prices for Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy are over-priced as hell. I don't know if Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh would play a role in the first team in the long run. Russell's and Narine's value are worth for money. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for KKR - 2.0/5.
Rajasthan Royals
- 6 players retained: Sanju Samson (INR 18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (INR 18 crore), Riyan Parag (INR 14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (INR 14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (INR 11 crore), Sandeep Sharma (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 41 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: None
- Players eligible for RTM: NA
- Big players not retained: Yuzvendra Chahal, Jos Buttler, R Ashwin
StormRiderzz' Analysis: RR have gone batting heavy with their retentions, keeping five batters
and only one bowler. They are one of two teams - KKR being the other -
to retain the maximum of six players. Jurel gets a massive boost with a
retention price tag of INR 14 crore. I don't know where to start... Riyan Parag seems to very overvalued at 14 crores. I personally rate Sandeep Sharma highly but RR could've tried for him in the auction with RTM. And last but not the least... DHRUV JUREL FOR A FREAKING 14 CRORES! What were RR smoking when they planned this retention? Personally as a cricket fan this bloody baffles me. Definitely overvalued. Overvalued to the core. They just wasted their purse amount. It's like it went down the drain, flushed down the toilet, it's gone. If every team had a total purse amount of 120 crores, RR fans should consider that they have only 106 crores. Damn, he might not even start for the team. Another Jaydev Unadkat strategy from RR, but only worse. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for RR - 2.0/5.
Gujarat Titans
- 5 players retained: Rashid Khan (INR 18 crore), Shubman Gill (INR 16.50 crore), Sai Sudharsan (INR 8.50 crore), Rahul Tewatia (INR 4 crore), Shahrukh Khan (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 69 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: One
- Players eligible for RTM: One capped player
- Big players not retained: Mohammed Shami, David Miller
StormRiderzz' Analysis: With Mohammed Shami sidelined by injury for a prolonged period, GT have
no fast bowlers among the five players they have retained. Rahul Tewatia at 4 crores is a steal. Rashid Khan and Gill's retention was expected and reasonable. Shahrukh Khan might be an OK kind of deal, but Sai Sudharsan for 8.5 crores... Over-priced. They must use the RTM Shami in the auction as he would be a pillar in the bowling unit. But even after retaining 3 world class players and two mediocre players, GT still have 69 crores going into the mega auction. Certainly a team to look out for. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for GT - 3.5/5.
Lucknow Super Giants
- 5 players retained: Nicholas Pooran (INR 21 crore), Ravi Bishnoi (INR 11 crore) Mayank Yadav (INR 11 crore), Mohsin Khan (INR 4 crore), Ayush Badoni (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 69 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 1
- Players eligible for RTM: One capped player
- Big players not retained: KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Krunal Pandya
StormRiderzz' Analysis: LSG will need to name a new captain for IPL 2025 after not retaining KL Rahul. Nicholas Pooran is the second-most expensive retention along with Virat Kohli, after Klaasen at INR 23 crore. Retaining Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav for 11 crores each is a questionable decision. It seems like a waste of money. Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni for a collective expense of 8 crores is a good deal. LSG certainly knows the value of these players. Nicholas Pooran for 21 crores is a risky bet. While he can be destructive on his day, his inconsistent performances in 2023 raise concerns. Only time will tell if this retention proves to be a wise decision. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for LSG: 2.0/5.
Punjab Kings
- 2 players retained: Shashank Singh (INR 5.5 crore), Prabhsimran Singh (INR 4 crore)
- Purse remaining for auction: INR 110.5 crore (out of INR 120 crore)
- Right-to-match (RTM) options at auction: 4
- Players eligible for RTM: Four capped players
- Big players not retained: Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada
StormRiderzz' Analysis: PBKS have retained the fewest players - two uncapped players - and therefore have the largest purse at the auction. They will need a new captain and almost an entirely new squad for IPL 2025. The deal with Shashank Singh could have been negotiated, but he is worth that price. They should use their Right to Match (RTM) card for Kagiso Rabada in the auction. He would undoubtedly be an invaluable asset for the franchise. With the right strategies going into the auction, PBKS can build a championship-winning squad. Nevertheless, PBKS is going to be a pain the back for other teams in the auction. Stormriderzz' strategy rating for PBKS - 5/5.
