DANCE - FOLK FORMS IN TAMILNADU
India has many different types of dancers including classical dances, folk dances and traditional dances. These dances have been originated from different parts of India
Dance forms in India:
The two major dance forms are classical and folk dance. The classical has a deep rooted relationship with the Natiya sastra and the folk dance represent the culture and tradition of the local community where they originated
FOLK DANCE OF TAMILNADU
There are many folk dances in Tamilnadu including :
• Devarattam • Pambu attam
• Kummi • Poi kal kuthirai aatam
• Karakattam • Mayilattam
• Kolatam • Oyil aattm
• Kavadi aattam • Parai aattam
• Silambattam • Puravai attam
• Puliattam
Devarattam
It is the traditional folk dance in Tamilnadu. It is performed by a troop of 8 or 10 dancers with two urumi players. It performed to the beats of Urmai , thappu meylam and flute. It is performed in the districts of Tuticorin and Virudhunagar in Tamilnadu.
Kummi
The kummi is a folk dance which is popular in Tamilnadu and Kerala. It is often performed by women in a circle. It is characterized by rhythmic clapping and singing. It is performed during festivals ,weddings and other celebrations.
Karakattam
• Aatta karagam
• Shakti karagam
Aata karagam symbolises joy and happiness meanwhile Shakti karagam symbolises spirituality and performed only in temples.
The most common song employees in amruthavarshini ragam.
Pambu aatam
Pambu aatam or the snake dance is performed by young girls in snake skin like costumes and involves mimicing the movements of snake.The dance is performed during temple festivals and other cultural events.
Mayil aatam
Mayil aatam is an artistic and religious form of dance performed in the Hindu temple of Tamilnadu and Kerala in reverence to Tamil God Murugan. The performers set themself upon a peacock replica which is the Mount of the diety.
Puli aatam
Puli aatam is performed by young men with painted bodies in colours of yellow and black complete with fangs, head ,gear with ears ,paws with claws and long tail stimulating the prancing and prancing tiger in every ferocious move.
Conclusion:
Dance is the integral part of Tamilnadu.It depicts living and cultural traditions of Tamilnadu. It also serves as a story telling method highlighting folklore as well as epics.
