SING A SONG

           SING A SONG

Alongside the ripples of the brook,
I sing a song,
Which is heard only by Narcissus.

Among the rustling of the leaves,
I sing a song,
Which is heard only by snakes.

In the clouds of the sky,
I sing a song,
Which is heard only by the ninth one.

Inside the hives of the bee,
I sing a song,
Which gets mixed only in the wax.

On the peak of the mountain,
I sing a song,
Which is peeked only by the lightning.

Within the widening sea,
I sing a song,
Which is absorbed only by the algae.

It’s a song of beauty,
A song of silence,
A song of zenith,
A song of philtre,
A song of the damp,
Equivalent to thunder,
Too tender to render.

No mortal beings can hear it,
No normal ears can bear it,
It's an eternal song of eternity.
The song sings about you as well,
The song sings about you as well..
                                               - S. R. Dhivya

Structure : This poem is of free verse with no particular rhyme scheme (but it contains rhyme in quite a few places). It begins with tercets, followed by a 7 line stanza and a 5 line stanza.

Title: SING A SONG - This symbolises the inner thoughts and feelings of a person, especially the speaker, which are expressed only to few as mentioned in the poem. It also signifies the secrets and unshared emotions of a soul which are inexplicable.

Making the title imperative, the poet expresses her desire to make her readers sing a song, similar to that of her.

Overall explanation:

'Alongside the ripples... Narcissus' - The poem begins with the note where the poet sings a song which gets mixed with the ripples, and the song is heard only be Narcissus, an obsessed self-lover. This shows the insecurity and fear of the poet of becoming selfish.

'Among the rustling... snakes' - The lines again shows the song getting along with the rustling of the leaves. It is heard only by snakes, which can naturally hear only low frequencies. This shows the faint in the voice of the poet, out of tiredness or due to the want maintain it a secret.

'In the clouds... ninth one' - The lines showcase the happiness of the poet, often unexpressed. The song she sings among the clouds is heard only be the ninth cloud, which is the symbol of joy. She emphasizes the fact that only the real happy ones can understand her happiness.

'Inside the hive... wax' - The poet sings inside the bee-hive, but the songs gets mixed in the wax, instead of honey. This shows that she doesn't want her song to be 'always sweet', but something close to it.

'On the peak... lightning' - When the poet sings the song on the peak, it is noticed only by the lightning that falls from the sky. This shows that her song is for those who fall, simultaneously is noticed by those from above, rather than those who are below.

'Within the widening sea... algae' - Next, the poet sings the song in the sea, which is absorbed only by algae i.e the thing which has utmost wetness, which is eventually expected in human hearts.

'It's a song....render' - This stanza explains what her song is all about, and highlights the power of the song similar to that of thunder. At the same time, the baby-like tenderness of the song is also proclaimed.

'No mortal beings .... eternity' - The three lines vividly describes the eternity of the song. The song cannot be easily heard or spontaneously understood by the mortal beings, and they need to rise nobler, above those of mortal minds which are already obsessed with other songs.

"The song sings about you as well

The song sings about you as well.." - At the end, the poet  makes it clear that her song is all about the people who are around her, the readers ; In nutshell, humans as a whole.
