Men are Brave but Alone

In a realm where deceitful snakes intertwine,
He stands like a lion, his heart pure and divine.

He walks the world with gentle care,
A heart that bends, a soul laid bare,
He lifts the weight from others' days,
And finds his worth in selfless ways.

For every smile that he selflessly sows,
He yearns for a touch that true tenderness knows.
Yet no one turns to meet his eyes,
As if his giving’s just the price.

He never asks for much return
A tender touch, a kind concern,
A hand to hold, a warm embrace,
But finds no comfort, no soft grace.

Still, day by day, he spreads his light,
Holds others up through their darkest night,
But dawn will break, and maybe, just maybe,
A heart will awaken to save him, set him free.

Still he stands, a flickering flame,
In silence, he dreams of love’s sweet name.

Analysis and Criticism of “Men Are Brave" but Alone

As the poet of Men Are Brave but Alone, this poem emerged from a deeply personal exploration of the strength many men exhibit, often to the detriment of their own emotional well-being. Writing this was a way to express how selflessness can paradoxically lead to isolation, how the act of giving might render one unseen. Below is a breakdown of how each aspect of the poem weaves together to create the message I aimed to portray.

Line-by-Line Explanation and Interpretation

In a realm where deceitful snakes intertwine,
He stands like a lion, his heart pure and divine.

I began by contrasting the man against his environment. The "deceitful snakes" represent a world filled with dishonesty and manipulation. Yet, amidst this, the man I describe rises like a lion—strong, noble, and untainted. The lion metaphor is deliberate, symbolizing courage and moral integrity, setting up the conflict between his noble heart and the world that surrounds him.

He walks the world with gentle care,
A heart that bends, a soul laid bare.

This couplet reveals the man’s tender side. He moves through life with care, constantly bending under the emotional weight of others. His vulnerability—"a soul laid bare"—is a key part of his character. This openness exposes him to pain, but it also allows him to connect with others, even if those connections aren't always reciprocated.

He lifts the weight from others' days,
And finds his worth in selfless ways.

Here, I highlight his acts of service. He helps others, lightening their burdens, which gives him a sense of purpose. This man finds fulfillment not in personal gain, but in giving. However, as the next couplets show, there’s a tragic side to this.

For every smile that he selflessly sows,
He yearns for a touch that true tenderness knows.

The turning point comes here, where the man’s internal struggle is exposed. Despite his outward generosity, he longs for intimacy, for "true tenderness." I wanted to juxtapose the emotional warmth he spreads with the coldness he feels in return. This yearning is subtle but profound—he craves love, something simple but, for him, unattainable.

Yet no one turns to meet his eyes,
As if his giving’s just the price.

These lines reflect how easily people overlook his contributions. There’s a quiet pain in the idea that people treat his kindness as an expectation, rather than a gift. They don’t "turn to meet his eyes," indicating their emotional distance from him. His selflessness becomes a burden, and here the theme of isolation begins to crystallize.

He never asks for much return—
A tender touch, a kind concern,
A hand to hold, a warm embrace,
But finds no comfort, no soft grace.

This quatrain dives deeper into his desires. He doesn’t demand grand gestures, only the simplest forms of love and care. The repetition of "tender touch" and "warm embrace" emphasizes how little he asks for, and yet even these small needs go unmet. The last line captures the stark reality of his emotional landscape—he "finds no comfort" in a world where he gives without receiving.

Still, day by day, he spreads his light,
Holds others up through darkest night,

Even in his loneliness, the man doesn’t falter. He continues to "spread his light," helping others navigate their own struggles. The imagery of the "darkest night" serves to heighten his role as a beacon for others, contrasting his internal darkness with the outward brightness he shares.

But dawn will break, and maybe, just maybe,
A heart will awaken to save him, set free.

Here, I introduce a sliver of hope. The "dawn" symbolizes a potential awakening, a moment when someone might finally recognize his worth. The repetition of "maybe, just maybe" softens this hope, making it tentative and fragile, much like the man’s own state of mind. He doesn’t ask for much—just for one heart to awaken and offer him the love he’s been denied.

Still he stands, a flickering flame,
In silence, he dreams of love’s sweet name.

The poem closes with an image of quiet endurance. The "flickering flame" suggests that while he remains standing, his spirit is vulnerable and close to extinguishing. Yet, in his silence, he continues to dream of love. This final line underscores the deep longing within him—unspoken, but ever-present.

Poetic Structure and Rhyme Scheme

The poem follows an AABB rhyme scheme, a classic structure that lends a rhythmic consistency to the piece. The use of couplets allowed me to keep the tone steady, reinforcing the balance between his outward strength and inner fragility. The rhyme scheme also mirrors the man’s ordered life, where despite emotional chaos, he continues to give, structure himself, and remain steadfast.

The Role of Heroic Couplets

The two heroic couplets at the beginning and end serve distinct purposes. In the opening couplet, I depict the man as a figure of courage—standing like a lion in a world of deceit. This couplet sets the tone for his moral and emotional strength. He is a hero, but an unsung one, brave not through battle, but through his capacity for kindness.

The closing couplet, however, softens the tone. The "flickering flame" suggests that even heroes have limits, that their bravery can lead to loneliness and exhaustion. While the first couplet frames him as a symbol of strength, the last one shows his vulnerability—he remains hopeful, but that hope is fragile, and unspoken. This dual use of heroic couplets mirrors his inner conflict: strong, yet yearning.

Poetic Devices

Several poetic devices are woven throughout the poem to emphasize key themes:

  •     Metaphor: The "lion" and the "flickering flame" frame his dual nature—both courageous and fragile.
  •     Imagery: The poem is built on images of light, touch, and movement, symbolizing both his emotional giving and his unfulfilled desires.
  •     Repetition: The repeated phrases of "tender touch" and "warm embrace" are meant to intensify the sense of longing.
  •     Contrast: His external actions (helping others) are set against his internal loneliness, highlighting the paradox of selflessness leading to isolation.

Final Note

A conversation with my brother and this scene from Game of Thrones inspired me to write this poem:

This man... No running, not being a coward, just straight honour. He never looked back, never sought help from anywhere or anyone. He accepted his fate with quiet resolve and faced his battles head-on. In the end, every man is destined to fight his wars alone. But when, against all odds, a helping hand appears—a lifeline in the darkest hour—that is the truest gift, the most profound support one could ever receive.

To all my brothers out there, do remember this - Sometimes, it feels like we'll always be alone, and the only thing keeping us company is our own pain. We tell ourselves we are the problem, especially when things we can't control come our way. That's why we must let go of the pain and remember what is that truly we are fighting for - the ones we love. Let that be the light that guides you through the treacherous of times and the darkest of nights.

  1. Noice, helping others without any expectations but there's a small expectation that is love, I see. We can help many but we can expect love and touch from one. Good one, mate.
