IPL - Best Possible Retentions (StormRiderzz' View)
Hello viewers, today I’m going to discuss the best retention strategies for all IPL franchises ahead of the official announcement on November 1st. Let’s get started.
Btw, if you don't know about the latest key updates on IPL Player Regulations 2025-2027, check out this post : https://stormriderzz.blogspot.com/2024/09/ipl-player-regulations-2025-2027-key.html
I’m personally following three retention strategies here, which I believe will be the most efficient use of the purse amount. The first strategy is retaining only capped players, up to five, which is the maximum number of retainable capped players. The second one is retaining only two players, both uncapped. Shocking? Unrealistic? Yes, I know. But it's just a loophole I discovered. You’ll see the best use of this strategy as we go on. My third strategy, which I will use the most in this discussion, involves retaining two capped players and one uncapped player. Yes, you read that right. Now, let me explain the player retention regulations of Tata IPL 2025.
Teams can retain a maximum of six players and a minimum of zero players. Yes, they could enter the auction with a clean slate and build the team from scratch. There is a standard deduction based on the number of players retained:
- 5 players (irrespective of whether they are capped or uncapped) = 75 crores (1 additional option of retaining 1 uncapped player available)
- 4 players (irrespective of whether they are capped or uncapped) = 68 crores
- 3 players (irrespective of whether they are capped or uncapped) = 43 crores
- 2 players (if one is capped and one uncapped) = 32 crores
- 2 players (if both are uncapped) = 4 + 4 crores (minimum retention for uncapped players)
- 1 player (if capped) = 18 crores
- 1 player (if uncapped) = 4 crores (minimum retention for uncapped players)
The minimum amount for retaining capped players is as follows: 18 (P1), 14 (P2), 11 (P3), 18 (P4), and 14 (P5). For uncapped players, the minimum amount is a standard four crores.
Phew! As chaotic and exhausting as this may sound, this is the task that franchise technical teams face. Analysts and pundits are doing their part (confusing the audience). I believe this is the simplest and most accurate explanation of the player retention regulations.
Now that we’re clear on the regulations, you can understand why I retain certain numbers of players or choose either capped or uncapped players. My aim is to use the 120-crore purse as efficiently as possible, giving each team a comfortable position for the upcoming auction. So, let’s get started with the best retentions for each franchise.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):
- No Retentions.
- Remaining purse amount: 120 crores.
Reason: KL Rahul is most likely to leave LSG due to the treatment he received from the LSG owners last year. No other player appears worth retaining in the minimum retention slab. While Quinton de Kock is a potential candidate, he is likely to fetch less than 18 crores (the minimum for a first-capped retention). Thus, any amount lower than that would be a profit for LSG, allowing them to use the Right to Match (RTM) if they strongly desire to retain De Kock. Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Ravi Bishnoi, and Devdutt Padikkal clearly cannot be considered uncapped players and are likely to fetch less than the minimum retention slab for capped players. LSG can utilize their RTMs in these cases.
Gujarat Titans (GT):
- Shubman Gill - 18 crores
- Rashid Khan - 14 crores
- Rahul Tewatia - 4 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 43 (36) = 77 crores
Reason: These players are likely to fetch high amounts in the auction, making it prudent to retain them as they form the core of the team. Mohammed Shami, often underrated, was surprisingly picked up for only 6.25 crores. While it's speculative, a worst-case scenario might see him fetch two crores more. However, he remains one of the IPL's most valuable players, warranting the use of the Right to Match (RTM). There's ample room for salary adjustments, as evidenced by Rahul Tewatia's 9.25 crore price tag in the last Mega Auction. With only 36 out of 43 crores spent in this scenario, some adjustments are feasible.
Rajasthan Royals (RR):
- Jos Buttler - 18 crores
- Sanju Samson - 14 crores
- Yashasvi Jaiswal - 11 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 43 = 77 crores.
Reason: They are the core of the team and would undoubtedly fetch more money in the auction. Therefore, it's wise to retain them at these reasonable amounts. However, some adjustments between their salaries could be made. Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, and Trent Boult should either be retained or bought back in the auction. They are often underrated and could be bargains.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):
- Heinrich Klaasen - 18 crores
- Travis Head - 14 crores
- Abhishek Sharma - 11 crores
- Pat Cummins - 18 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 61 = 59 crores
Reason: Absolutely worth it, no questions asked. These retentions alone are a bargain. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Natarajan can be retained using the Right to Match (RTM) as they are unlikely to fetch as much as 11 crores. This is the best retention strategy for SRH.
Delhi Capitals (DC):
- Rishabh Pant - 18 crores
- Axar Patel - 14 crores
- Jake Fraser-McGurk - 11 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 43 = 77 crores
Reason: Again, absolutely worth it. McGurk would undoubtedly fetch more in the auction, so it's best to retain him. I'd like to take a gamble on Mitchell Marsh, who was bought by Delhi for only 6.5 crores. While his last IPL performance was underwhelming, his international performances are undoubtedly impressive. Anything under 11 crores would be a bargain. David Warner should also be bought back or retained using the RTM. Kuldeep Yadav and Anrich Nortje should also be acquired through the RTM or bought back in the auction.
Punjab Kings (PBKS):
- Shashank Singh (uncapped) - 4 crores
- Prabhsimran Singh (uncapped) - 4 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 8 = 112 crores
Reason: These two players, if they can replicate last season's performance, are truly worth retaining. The others were inconsistent, so it's unlikely they'll fetch more in the auction. Kagiso Rabada is unlikely to fetch 18 crores (the minimum for a capped player) in the auction. The Right to Match (RTM) and buyback options include Kagiso Rabada, Riley Rossouw, Shikhar Dhawan, Johnny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Liam Livingstone, and Arshdeep Singh. A significant advantage for PBKS is the substantial amount of money they'll have for the auction.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):
- Shreyas Iyer - 18 crores
- Andre Russell - 14 crores
- Sunil Narine (uncapped) - 4 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 43 (36) = 77 crores
Reason: Sunil Narine as an uncapped player is a great advantage. Deals will be made for the remaining 7 crores, and the order of retentions may change. Rinku Singh, Mitchell Starc, and Venkatesh Iyer should be considered for RTMs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB):
- Virat Kohli - 18 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 18 = 102 crores
Reason: The only player deserving retention is Virat Kohli. Siraj is not suitable for T20 cricket. Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik are aging and inconsistent, though they can still have match-winning performances. I would use the Right to Match (RTM) to retain them at reasonable prices. If I had another capped player slot, I would have retained Rajat Pattidar as my third player. I'll would keep an eye out for him in the auction.
Mumbai Indians (MI):
- Hardik Pandya - 18 crores
- Rohit Sharma - 14 crores
- Ishan Kishan - 11 crores
- Jasprit Bumrah - 18 crores
- Suryakumar Yadav - 14 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 75 = 45 crores
Reason:
Recent reports indicate that Rohit Sharma has chosen to remain with the Mumbai Indians. The franchise can utilize the Right to Match (RTM) to retain Tilak Varma. However, with only 45 crores remaining in their purse, MI will need to identify talented players and secure bargains in the upcoming auction. Historically, MI has excelled at finding hidden gems and making shrewd acquisitions.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK):
- Ruturaj Gaikwad - 18 crores
- Devon Conway - 14 crores
- Shivam Dube - 11 crores
- Ravindra Jadeja - 18 crores
- Matheesha Pathirana - 14 crores
- Mahendra Singh Dhoni (uncapped) - 4 crores
- Remaining purse: 120 - 79 = 41 crores
Reason: No explanation needed. Devon Conway and Shivam Dube's retention positions might change. Salary adjustments will be made among these six players to accommodate Dhoni. Rachin Ravindra will not be retained, as the team had to choose between him and Conway, with Conway being more likely to fetch a higher price in the auction. However, Rachin should be bought back as he's a promising talent. Matheesha Pathirana's 14 crore valuation reflects the high demand for economical bowlers with wicket-taking abilities. Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur should not be prioritized for buybacks, unless they go unsold in the auction.
So, this is my opinion on the best possible retentions each franchise could make. Make sure to share your reviews and what would you like us post next, in the comments section, Stay tuned to Stormriderzz blogs for more, Have a great day, Cheers. 🍻
